Catalunya and Spain have a fantastic network of cycle paths
www.viasverdes.com but there isn't a good co-ordinated bike
rental service accessible by public transport. This is one of
the possible options if you don't want to drive
to/from.

As I said above there is no co-ordinated bike rental service
for the vias verdes, only various privately run rentals. This
one of the ones I have tried that was great -it is open 365
days a year (although you should call first) and seems to be
run by a guy who really does it 'for the love of it'. The vias
verdes are usually old railway lines that have been converted
to cycle paths, and this business is in one of the old stations
at Amer (small village between Girona and Olot). The actual
office isn't open all the time but if you call then he will
arrange to meet you. When we returned our bikes we called
him and he came over in 5 minutes, and even offered to drive
us back to the bus stop! Before we set off he made sure that
the bikes were properly adjusted for us, that we had the
pump/puncture kit and that we knew where we were going
(as well as the via verde there are several more demanding
Mountain Bike circuits starting from this office). Will
definitely
use again. Only reason not a 5 is that my companion's bike
frame was slightly too small (he is v big!) and the bike
handles were very hard - I should have worn cycling gloves
as my hands felt bruised after going down a long hill. They
provide all sorts of bikes including tandems,
recumbents, hand-pedal bikes and kids bikes/accessories,
although for some of these I guess you would need to call
ahead and reserve to be sure to get them. They also do
guided tours and you can arrange (in advance) a pick-up if
you want to do a one-way cycle ride.
