Review For: La Brasserie (Owners)
Verdict: Disappointing
Show Full Details
Description: A restaurant / bar in Abergavenny.
Opinion: I had great expectations of this place - good feedback from
a variety of friends and contacts made me think I was in for
a treat. In the end, about 50% of a treat. The wine list was
reasonable and the 2002 Barolo DOCG was superb but, big but,
the main courses were extremely disappointing. Too much
stodgy pasta overloaded with sun dried tomatoes and poor
quality olive oil.
Wine excellent; starters good; main courses poor.

Review For: Hotel in Falls Church (Marriott)
Verdict: Under renovation
Show Full Details
Description: Marriott hotel in Falls Church, Virginia.
Opinion: Stayed here a few times before but, this time, it seems that
half the hotel is closed for refurbishment. It would be good
if this was made public when booking rooms.
Let's hope it is back to it's usual standards when it
finishes the works.

Review For: Blues Bar (Harvelles)
Verdict: Down and dirty blues
Show Full Details
Description: A real find - a blues bar in Santa Monica. Dark space with
good loud bands, what more do you want?
Opinion: A few of us went out and about in Santa Monica after our
conference here. A random referral from the doorman at the
bar pointed us to Harvelles - a blues bar half a block South
from 4th and Santa Monica. As it was Thursday, the band was
JT and his crew. Deep blues from old to modern done by a
really tight band with that so often lacking quality:
personality! Dark atmosphere with nice beers at reasonable
prices. Beware the toilets though: all black enamel and a
shared space for urinal and WC got one of the group a
surprise (and a new friend!).
